    Screencasts in Education

I just found out about a new screencast tool called Screenjelly.  What is Screenjelly you ask?  It is a free, web-based screen recorder that quickly captures your computer's video and audio so you can share it with others online via Twitter, Facebook, email, etc.  It runs in your browser so there is nothing to download.  Screenjelly accounts are based on Twitter accounts so if you want to use it you will have to sign up for Twitter if you haven't already.  It's the quickest way to share what's happening on your screen and get instant feedback.  All you have to do is press the red button to start the recording and you'll have a ready-to-tweet screencast in seconds.

Some educational uses for Screenjelly include:
    • Quick Tutorials
    • Sharing comments, opinions and ideas
    • Peer review
    • Brainstorming
    • Homework tips
    • Quick Reminders
    • Show off new web finds
Some other free screencast tools are Jing and ScreenrJing requires you to download the software but Screenjelly and Screenr do not since they are browser-based.  Screenjelly videos are typically three minutes or under.  If you would like to record more than three minutes then check out Screentoaster, which is another free screencast tool.

Social Networking isn't just for friends and family

One thing that has recently caught my attention was a Computerworld article I read about using social networking for job hunting. I had read in the Charlotte Observer where some people landed a job through their tweets on Twitter.  I even came across a website called TweetMyJobs which connects job candidates and recruiters.

I'm sure most people view social networking as something fun where you connect with friends and family and make new friends but how many people actually use it for networking and job opportunities? How will this affect job hunting in the future? Will using these tools and getting your name out there give you the competitive edge? I'm sure if depends on your field too.

Using social networking online actually makes a lot of sense to me, especially from an employer's point of view. I mean think about it:

You have the chance to read about the experiences and accomplishments of someone online. They create a website or complete a project and post information about it and you are impressed. Then you read their thoughts on their blog and follow their tweets. You like the person’s philosophy and from what you can tell they have a decent work ethic and seem knowledgeable. The more you get to know them online and see who they know, what they know, what they are doing, what they have done, what they want to do, and what they think you have found a perfect candidate for a job. There is only so much you can learn from a person by reading a resume or by conducting an interview. However, by networking online and seeing their online persona will definitely give you a better idea of who they are.

I have heard all about Linkedin.com but I just now decided to join it to see what happens. I’m not currently looking for a job but I would like to network and I will be looking for one sometime in the future once I graduate and besides, it would be cool to network with others in my field.  Here is my profile in case anyone is interested.

    Capstone Project and Random Thoughts

As I was thinking about a Capstone project I have to do for a class, I was thinking really hard about how I can incorporate so many Web 2.0 tools into it and link them all together. With that thinking and planning I had an a-ha moment. For example, I could use Wordle in a different way. I could upload some text/paragraph about a topic and have students guess what it is about. Or with Twitter, it won't just be another boring "What I'm doing at the moment type of thing". I could relay pertinent information while we plan the trip such as tips, tools, things I found to look up, travel info, new information about trip, etc. Then while we are there we could use it to tell what we are doing, where we are, etc. to keep everyone at home informed.  I would love to use Ning so students can have a space online to share their experiences and knowledge. Before the trip it would be important that students know where they are going and to learn about the place more so using Google Earth and Google Sightseeing, YouTube videos, photos, etc. would help them become familiar. Listening to music of that region would also be helpful. Students could even take a virtual fieldtrip to Second Life and explore it there and then compare it to the real Maya Riviera or students who couldn't go on the field trip could still join us and learn about it online. We could even have virtual meetings online regarding the trip which can also be saved for future viewing. I never realized how well you can really stay connected with others through these Web 2.0 tools and how interralated they are. Talk about truly being connected to the world!

    Twitter

I just started using twitter. If you want to follow my tweets you can sign up to follow me here. My twitter name is modern_diva because I see myself as well...a modern diva! lol

    Twitter website
    My twitter profile

Even though I have been dabbling with twitter, I don't see the point of using it. So basically all you do is post what you are up to or what you are thinking. I started looking for people to follow and all of a sudden there was an influx of people and organizations and tons of spammers who are following me. I don't like that aspect, especially all of the spammers. Yeah, I know all I have to do is delete them or whatever but still. Conceptually I can see how it might work in education but I need to explore this further.  I know twitter seems to be all the rage but I just don't think it is so great even though I hear about twitter on the radio, tv, internet, work, everywhere. There have been times when I wanted to post a follow up comment about someone's post but couldn't. On Facebook you can comment on people's posts. Also, if I want to see what someone is up to, I can just look on Facebook. So why have both? What is the difference? What is the purpose of twitter? Is it just a fad that will soon be gone and forgotten or is really something big that's going to last? I will explore it more and more but for now I am not that crazy about it since I don't really see what is so great about it.

    Learning about Web 2.0 Tools

I am learning about different Web 2.0 applications. Some I have used before such as Facebook, MySpace, Second Life (just dabbled with it), Twitter (again, just dabbled), Photobucket, Flickr, Slide, YouTube (never uploaded a video before), Skype and other instant messengers, Moodle, wikis, blogs, and a few others.  Now I am on a mission to learn more about Web 2.0 tools.
Even though I know HTML and CSS and love to design Dreamweaver websites I also would like to explore other tools for building websites.  I just created a simple CMSimple Website. It is very easy to use and fairly intuitive. One can very easily build a simple, yet nice looking website without having to learn HTML or CSS. I will confess I kind of scoffed at the idea of using a CMSimple website at the beginning but I have since changed my mind. It’s a great tool and a great way to have others who aren’t experts in web design to create a great-looking website easily and without having to spend a lot of money on expensive software.

I recently joined the Classroom 2.0 Community in Ning. I had heard of Ning before but never joined it. It is a great social networking site similar to Facebook or MySpace but more controlled and you can join groups specific to your interests. Ning is a great tool for teachers to use with a class since it is more controlled and they won’t have to worry about outsiders “crashing the party” so to speak. If you are an educator and would love to learn more about Web 2.0, social networking, and builing learning communities then I highly recommend Ning.

Another Web 2.0 tool that I love is Wordle. You copy and paste text such as a blog entry, paragraph, story, web content or anything and it will put it in a word cloud. I created one with this blog entry and here is what it came up with:

Stay tuned because I will be sharing more and more applications and their practical uses as I progress through my studies in the New Media and Global Education Program at Appalachian State University.
